An 8-Week SoulCollage® Journey Into the World of 4 Fairy Tales

Fairy tales since the beginning of recorded time, and perhaps earlier, have been a means to conquer the terrors of mankind through metaphor.” - Jack Zipes

September 9 - November 3, 2018

We have ventured Into the Woods with the first course of 6 fairy tales, and now with the next 4, we discover the power of transformation and what it takes to deal with tricksters.

Fairy tales are peopled with all sorts of mystical beings--tricksters and shapeshifters--who test a hero or heroine through their clever ruses and secret knowledge. They are change-masters who challenge the hero/heroine to a match of wits and don’t always play fair (such is life).

The fun in exploring these fairy tales is to imagine ourselves on the Heroine’s Journey. Once we answer the Call to Adventure and make the first step along the Road of Trials, we find ourselves being initiated into a new world--a dream landscape--where we meet tricksters and guides who will help us with the challenges and tests we will encounter along the way.  We will be tried and must pass the tests, which may indeed involve a death and rebirth experience, to learn to perceive ourselves and our own world differently, and to receive the boon of self-knowledge and wisdom.

The fairy tale journey may look like an outward trek across plains and mountains, through castles and forests, but the actual movement is inward, into the lands of the soul.
— Terri Windling, "White as Snow: Fairy Tales and Fantasy"

When we come upon the trickster, usually a Threshold Guardian, as Joseph Campbell termed it, we must use our tools of love and logic, persistence and cunning, innocence and experience--to overcome the obstacles presented to us.

Most fairy tales are stories of transformation--the growth that occurs as part of the initiation into a new way of seeing and being. It could be an initiation into adulthood, agency, a new passion or way of life, and through it we learn to individuate. Carl Jung coined the term, individuation, to mean the lifelong process by which the unconscious is made conscious and our inner parts are integrated on our way to wholeness.

Together we will journey through these four tales and meet in a secret Facebook group (optional) to share our images and wisdom. Every two weeks you will be provided with the fairy tale to read as well as an illustrated 5-page pdf of the course so we can get to know the history, themes, characters/archetypes, and symbols of each story, using a Jungian approach to interpreting the deeper meaning of these wonder tales and how they apply to us. We can create art journal pages or SoulCollage® cards for each fairy tale as we feel moved. We can add to our SoulCollage® deck as we explore archetypes (Council suit) and inner parts (Committee suit), as well as animal allies we may encounter (Companions Suit) and Community members (people we know who may be represented in these stories and themes). So please join us for this new adventure of self-exploration and self-discovery as we navigate the following themes of tricksters and transformation:

Another fabulous online course from Stephanie! Turns out fairytales aren’t just for children. Once Upon a Time took us deep into the psychological meanings and archetypal energies of fairytales, illuminating how echoes of all that resonate in the lives of adult women today. Stephanie’s training as a therapist allowed her to gently and confidently guide us through the dark woods and back home safely. A resourceful group of women shared their own stories, supported each other, brought other unique resources to our attention, and produced an awesome array of cards. Stephanie’s lessons and creative assignments encouraged us to dig deep and find the beauty within our still-unfolding individual journeys. I appreciated how attentively and appropriately she responded to all the postings in the private group. I loved the whole experience and can’t wait for her next fairytale course!

“Fairy tales are born out of necessity and desire.” - Jack Zipes, Fairy Tale as Myth

The wonderful storyteller and Jungian analyst, Clarissa Pinkola Estes implores us to “Go out in the woods, go out. If you don’t go out in the woods nothing will ever happen and your life will never begin.”

And that is just what we will do on our 3-month journey through 6 fairy tales. Every two weeks we will dive into a new fairy tale -- each one of an intrepid girl who enters the forest (initiation), responds to a challenge (integration), and comes out transformed (individuation). We will become the little girl who ventures into the unknown, ready to discover what we need to know about ourselves and the world, the light and the shadow, the big bad wolf and the fairy godmother, the handsome prince and the wicked witch. Is it possible they are all parts of the Self that we must encounter, grapple with, and integrate to leave the forest a fully-formed human being?

Fairy tales have long been told as cautionary tales with morals and motives disguised as metaphor. Initially, they were stories for adults to both entertain and educate one another about the vicissitudes of life. They were told around the fire, the table, in the parlour, and eventually to children in their beds--the little ones had to have overheard these tales and implored their elders for more.

Many fairy tales have their genesis in ancient myths or folk tales that were passed down from generation to generation, over centuries, across borders. These stories have been told and retold around the world so that there is much cross-cultural overlap from one country to another. We will explore some of these origins as well as the archetypes that live in the world of fairy tales, such as the orphan, the divine child, the innocent, the witch, the predator, the princess and prince, queen and king, the castle, the forest, the path, the gift, and more.

Every two weeks, from New Moon to Full Moon, and Full Moon to New Moon, we will immerse ourselves in a fairy tale. You will receive a 5 page pdf about the fairy tale, discussing its symbolism, origins, and archetypes. You are invited to read the story  and make SoulCollage® cards of the archetypes and themes as you feel inspired. Those familiar with SoulCollage® will see that some cards will fit into their Council suit (archetypes), while others will find a home in the Committee suit (inner parts), while some may join their Companion suit (animal guides and allies). You will be able to share your cards and wisdom in a secret Facebook group of sister SoulCollagers if you like.

Each of the 6 fairy tales selected for this course will feature the motif of the little girl venturing “Into the Woods,” the heroine’s journey of answering the call--going into the dark forest where enchanted beings such as tricksters, dwarfs, witches, ogres, talking animals, and other magical creatures live.

We will get in touch with our inner child--the innocent, who faces adversity, learns what skills she must, discovers who her guides and helpers are, has her mettle tested, gains wisdom, and comes out changed--all necessary steps on the path of individuation.

Carl Jung coined the term, individuation, a lifelong process by which the unconscious is made conscious, the psyche is integrated, and transformation and enlightenment are achieved. Jung was careful to say the individuation process is not for everyone. It is, however, an exciting journey for those seekers who want to know more about themselves and who are willing to explore the depths of their soul. The rewards are many: self-discovery, self-awareness, and integration of the many selves, including the shadow--that which is hard to see, much less own. If that journey entices you, then please come along as we step

The 2016 course was a joyful journey into the realm of the imagination. Here's what participants of the first course had to say:

I started this course as a mostly beginner. I have gotten so much out of it. My confidence in approaching the cards in general has increased. I am using my cards more. I find that as I travel through life and its lessons, the image or name of a Major Arcana card will come to mind, shedding insight and Light onto the situation. Thank you, Stephanie Anderson Ladd, for this course. You created a safe vessel to explore the cards both inwardly and intellectually. I love the practical depth you brought to understanding the Major Arcana and thus all the cards. I loved this group. - Janhavi M.

I especially appreciate the connections made in this course between the tarot trump cards and astrology, the chakras, relevant gods and goddesses, Jungian archetypes, and other modalities. It's been a wonderful complement to our SoulCollage suits.... This truly has been a master class enhanced by the contributions of so many in the group. Thanks to all! - Karen R.

I have learned much more than "Tarot", and understand how I can draw on ancient wisdom and knowledge patterns in forming my consciousness. Thank you, Stephanie, and to all my Tarot sisters. - Mairim G.

Thank you so much, Stephanie, for your inspiration and dedication in putting this course together. It feels like I have found a community of like-minded soul sisters, and I am truly grateful. It's hard to put into words how much I have learned because a lot of it expresses itself through subtle connections that I am still making. And perhaps it's too soon to say how much - I am certain that it will be many months in the gestation! - Ruth G.

Stephanie, I LOVE this class!! Thank you for all your insight, wisdom and enthusiasm!! I also loved all the connection and creativity of all the women who participated!! Thanks! - Vicki W.

I have been touched deeply by your teachings as well as everyone's contributions. The cards and accompanying insights have been profound and soul-stirring. - Lisa P.

What a creative, thoughtful, wise group we've had, and such detailed, rich, incredible teaching! - Lynne L.

Thank you Stephanie for your brave and beautiful leadership as you've guided us on this amazing path into our souls. - Kathy A.
