“Fairy tales since the beginning of recorded time, and perhaps earlier, have been a means to conquer the terrors of mankind through metaphor.” - Jack Zipes
We have ventured Into the Woods with the first course of 6 fairy tales, and now with the next 4, we discover the power of transformation and what it takes to deal with tricksters.
Fairy tales are peopled with all sorts of mystical beings--tricksters and shapeshifters--who test a hero or heroine through their clever ruses and secret knowledge. They are change-masters who challenge the hero/heroine to a match of wits and don’t always play fair (such is life).
The fun in exploring these fairy tales is to imagine ourselves on the Heroine’s Journey. Once we answer the Call to Adventure and make the first step along the Road of Trials, we find ourselves being initiated into a new world--a dream landscape--where we meet tricksters and guides who will help us with the challenges and tests we will encounter along the way. We will be tried and must pass the tests, which may indeed involve a death and rebirth experience, to learn to perceive ourselves and our own world differently, and to receive the boon of self-knowledge and wisdom.
